Cannabis search volume analysis: This is where interest in CBD and cannabis is greatest in Germany
Interest in cannabis and CBD products has boomed among Germans in recent years. This topic has gained momentum again, especially since legalization in April 2024. We at HIZEN have taken a closer look at the trend and analyzed where interest in cannabis and CBD products is greatest in Germany. For our analysis, we analyzed 2019 of the most searched keywords per month in more than 2024 Google searches in the cannabis and CBD category in Germany from January 600 to July 100.000 and created a ranking based on the regional reference.. The result:
Great interest in cannabis in Berlin and Munich
The federal capital Berlin takes first place in the comparison of the ten largest German cities, with an average of 12.960 cannabis and CBD-related Google searches per month. Munich follows in second place with 10.020 corresponding searches and the Hanseatic city of Hamburg takes third place with 9.545 Google searches per month. The last two places in the comparison of the ten largest cities are taken by Dortmund with 3.135 searches and Essen with 2.465.
City states dominate federal state comparison
In a comparison between the German federal states, the city states share the podium. Bremen has around 100.000 searches related to CBD and cannabis per 117 inhabitants. Hamburg (104) and Berlin (74) follow in second and third place. The largest federal state, Bavaria, takes fourth place with around 37 searches per 100.000 inhabitants, followed by Saarland with 10 corresponding queries. Interest is comparatively low in Saxony-Anhalt (0,7), Rhineland-Palatinate (0,5) and Thuringia (0,2). These three federal states end up at the bottom of the ranking with less than one query per 100.000 inhabitants.
Search volume for cannabis prescription increases dramatically
Search queries for cannabis on prescription are experiencing a real boom. Interest in online prescriptions for cannabis averaged 2019 search queries per month from the beginning of 2023 to the end of 235, rising to over 2024 corresponding queries in April 44.584, the time of legalization. Since then, the monthly search volume has been consistently around 6.000 queries. Interest in ordering cannabis online without a prescription has risen similarly sharply. Here, the monthly search volume averaged 26 queries over the past five years. At the time of legalization, the volume of corresponding search queries rose to 12.690. Since then, the number of such Google searches per month has consistently been over 11.000.
