The THC content of cannabis flowers

July 01, 2024Gabor Daniel

Growing weed, smoking weed, all well and good, but how do I know how strong it will be in the end? THC content of cannabis flowers It's not that easy to find out. And yet it's all the more important, because anyone who likes to roll a joint after work in the evening (or unpacks the HIZEN vaporizer) and still wants to drive to work in the morning should be well informed. So: How do you find out what the content of your weed is? And does the leaf also contain THC? How much can you still get into the car with? Read on, because we'll answer all of these questions.

Measuring THC content

First of all: You can determine the THC content in cannabis flowers do not measure yourselfTo do this, you would have to send the flowers to a laboratory - and that is expensive. So if you grow it yourself, you have little chance of getting accurate and reliable information about the content in your own weed.

If you have your Cannabis from the pharmacy , things are different. The THC content of medical marijuana is standardized and, like the purity and quality of the flowers, is subject to strict guidelines. The pharmacy can therefore tell you exactly how much content your strain has.

You were in Amsterdam? Then just ask in the shop when you buy here. Assuming it is a quality shop and not a simple tourist shop, the employees will be able to tell you pretty precisely which variety has which THC content.

THC content in cannabis for beginners

But back to growing your own cannabis - or growing it in future cannabis social clubs. In Germany, we will be confronted more often with the question of how much THC is in the weed. The first thing to do is to find out what type of cannabis it is. Did you grow it yourself? Perfect, then you probably still know what you planted. Did you get it from a friend? Ask!

Because different genetics also have different maximum THC levels. Although you can't find out exactly how much THC is in the flower on the table in front of you, you can at least determine how much content can be extracted from the flowers with ideal cultivation. An upper limit is better than nothing!

A list of the THC content of the most popular strains

Amnesia Haze (THC content)

20-25%

White Widow (THC content)

18-25%

Gorilla Glue (THC content)

25-30%

Lemon Haze (THC content)

15-25%

By the way: The much-requested "Cali-Weed" has a THC content of 20-30% and is also quite strong. However, this is not a single variety, but rather a whole group of weed varieties that originally come from California. So it is more of a colloquial term - not a specific cannabis genetics that can be bred.

THC content of hemp leaves

Yes, there is THC in the leaves of the female hemp plant. Not as much as in the flowers, but still enough that it is worth not throwing them away. Especially those who grow their own plants can still find good uses here: For example, boiled in oil, in brownies and other edibles or simply as an additive in joints or VaporizerDepending on which leaves we are talking about (sugar leaves have a higher content than fan leaves), cannabis leaves can still contain up to 5%. Too bad to throw away, we say!

The development of THC content – from the past to the present

Although a content of over 20% is no longer uncommon these days, it used to be different. One reason for this is that in recent years cannabis has been bred specifically for a higher THC content - and dogs have been bred specifically for hunting. Cultivation methods have also become more refined, making it possible to get more out of the same plants. But the development that the THC content in cannabis flowers has taken is almost shocking: in the 80s, the average content of available weed was just 1-3%.

It wasn't until the 90s that growers began to steadily increase the THC content until it reached around 4-6%. That's already double what it was in the decade before - and still nothing compared to the content in the weed we know today.

The massive increase then occurred in the early 2000s. From then on, the THC content rose rapidly to over 10% and from there to the levels we know today. Of course, there are still varieties with low levels today - but low here still means around 15%.

One could criticize this development for various reasons, but one should also consider that the medical use of cannabis was only made possible by the high THC content and the associated, stronger psychoactive effects.

Which strain has the highest THC content in the world?

We're not the only ones wondering this, and here's the answer: There is no such thing as the strongest strain. However, there are a few individual genetics that regularly produce THC levels of 30% or more. These include:

Bruce Banner #3

This variety can reach levels of about 29-30% .

Gorilla Glue #4 (GG4)

Known for their high content, which typically ranges between 25% and 30% lies.

Strawberry Banana

This variety has contents of about 26-28%.

Girl Scout Cookies (GSC)

GSC has salaries that are often 25-28% lie.

Chemdawg

This variety has contents of about 24-32%.

These varieties are also often used in other, derived varieties, such as GSC: Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies, Animal Cookies, Gelato Cookies, Wedding Cake, ... you know the names - and rightly so.

THC content in the blood: This is allowed

In this high THC content in today's cannabis The question arises: What about the permitted THC content in the blood? Since legalization, the topic has been hotly debated - and those responsible have now come to the following decision:

Anyone who is stopped in traffic may maximum 3,5 ng/ml blood serum Anything beyond that will be prosecuted. The calculation was as follows: Assuming that a recreational smoker smokes a joint with about 30% weed once a week, which in turn has a maximum content of 10%, this smoker has a value that never exceeds 3,5 ng/ml blood serum.

Based on the values shown above, with cannabis varieties that rarely fall below 15% THC content, this calculation may be somewhat questioned. Nevertheless, this rule is valid and we say: stick to it!

THC content in flowers, leaves, blood: Conclusion

This should provide the most important information on all topics related to THC content of cannabis in a variety of contexts. In any case, you should always think for yourself, try new types carefully and never take any risks in traffic - that goes without saying, right?
