It is clear: Medical weed from the pharmacy calls for a medical vaporizer. But what exactly makes them so special that they can be prescribed by health insurance? And can anyone who has a cannabis prescription also get a medical vaporizer on prescription received? It's good that HIZEN knows about this and can provide information. Hopefully you already know how it works with the bees and the flowers.
Do medical vaporizers even exist?
Yes. And they are really expensive. But what are you paying for and why doesn't a "normal" vaporizer do the job? Actually, it's quite clear. Just like medically prescribed cannabis, medical vaporizers are subject to strict guidelines. They undergo rigorous testing and, above all, they are highly precise. While the temperatures of vaporizers normally available in stores can be set but do not always heat to the exact degree (which makes no difference for most types of use), medical vaporizers can produce exactly the temperature that you as the user are aiming for. This is a selling point because with medical cannabis, very specific active ingredients often have to be extracted.
We already know that different terpenes and cannabinoids require different temperatures to change their state from solid to gaseous - and this is the only way they can be absorbed through the lungs. The more precisely the temperature can be set, the more effective the effects of the cannabis.

Will my health insurance pay for the medical vaporizer?
No, not always. If you have a cannabis prescription yourself or have already tried to apply for one, you know that the regulations are very strict and not everyone can just buy weed in the pharmacy. And just because you get a prescription, that doesn't mean that the health insurance company will cover the costs of the treatment. And it's the same with medical vaporizers - only a little more complicated. Because: You first have to have an official cannabis prescription in order to get a prescription for a Vaporizer with medical approval (PZN) to get.

And even with this prescription, the doctor's certificate and a cost estimate, health insurance companies often decide that no financial support is necessary. In the vast majority of cases, there has to be a really good reason (i.e. a serious illness) for treatment to be billed through the health insurance company.
Can I simply buy a vaporizer for cannabis flowers with PZN myself?
In fact, the situation is much simpler here than with cannabis prescriptions. Vaporizers are expensive, but they can also be easily ordered online by private individuals. This is not the case with cannabis, of course. You still need a prescription issued by a doctor so that you can redeem it at the pharmacy. And for good reason: cannabis is, after all, a psychoactive substance that can cause a lot of harm if used irresponsibly. Even in a medically approved vaporizer, you could theoretically just vaporize peppermint. In this sense, the product poses no danger and the main difference in its functionality is its higher quality compared to standard products. Medical vaporizers are much more expensive for this very reason and you can quickly spend a few hundred euros if you want to invest in one. However, if you only want the best of the best and are willing to make this investment, there are some major advantages over the usual devices:
- Constant performance: The devices are designed to deliver consistent results even with repeated use.
- Longevity and Guarantee: Medical vaporizers are often more robustly built and come with longer warranties to ensure they work reliably for years to come.
- dosing aids: They are often equipped with special capsules, chambers or measuring aids to simplify dosing for the patient.
- Tailored for medical use: They are specifically developed for patients who depend on reliable and low-pollutant inhalation.
- Optimal drug release: The devices are designed to extract the maximum amount of active ingredients from the flowers or extracts without leaving any residue.
- Easy to clean: They are designed to be easy to clean, which is especially important for medical use.
Reduced risk of material overheating: Medical models are equipped with technologies that prevent the material from overheating.

That's all well and good, but... why are they so expensive?
Medical vaporizers are significantly more expensive than conventional devices because they are specially developed for therapeutic use and are subject to the strict quality and safety standards mentioned above. Their materials and workmanship meet the high requirements of medical devices - this is the only way to ensure that they are really safe and effective for long-term use. In order to obtain certification as a medical device, extensive tests are required, for example to check that the materials used are free of harmful substances, longevity and precise temperature control.
The devices also offer an exceptionally precise dosage, which is crucial to ensure a consistent effect when treating patients - what many people do not know is that with a cannabis prescription, you do not simply get as much as you want, but as much as you need. This is determined and set over a longer period of time under the strict guidance of the treating doctor. Many medical vaporizers also include additional functions such as specially designed chambers for standardized filling quantities and specific temperature settings to guarantee the optimal release of active ingredients. Such features naturally increase the manufacturing costs - and the purchase price. Incidentally, neither the material costs nor the costs for certification are really low. All in all, this justifies the high purchase price - especially when you consider the purpose for which the medical vaporizers are used.

How unhealthy are vaporizers?
Smoking can be fatal – you can read that on every cigarette packet these days. But what about vaping – or consuming herbs using a vaporizer? Whether medicinal or not, with a vaporizer, dry herbal material is first heated and the resulting vapor is inhaled. And while steam baths definitely fall into the category of “health-promoting”, the vapor from a vaporizer is a little different. Although the temperatures are much lower than with smoking (up to 900 °C!), namely a maximum of 220 °C (with HIZEN vaporizers), harmful substances are released from plant material at temperatures as low as 205 °C. Much more harmful to health than these harmful substances, however, are those that arise from poorly processed or inferior materials in the vaporizer. It has been found that there are always devices on the market that produce toxic vapors when heated. To put it mildly: That’s not so good!
And long term?
Unfortunately, little is known about the long-term effects of using vaporizers. There are no meaningful studies examining the effects on health.
However, you can use a few small tricks to at least minimize the health risks:
- Clean your vaporizer (medical or not) regularly. Residues of plants, oils or waxes that are heated up again during the next use not only change the taste, but can also become unhygienic in the long run and cause health problems.
- Make sure not to let the vaporizer overheat - especially with no-name recreational vaporizers. It is better not to set it to the maximum level, but to stay in the lower temperature ranges. THC becomes gaseous at temperatures above 180 °C anyway.
3. Choose a high-quality vaporizer instead of the cheapest one. High quality does not have to mean unaffordable, our Stilus Mini for example, is both high quality and absolutely affordable.

Is a medical vaporizer worth it?
The decision to go into one medical vaporizer Investing in a vaporizer requires a balance between the high initial costs and the long-term benefits. Medical vaporizers offer significantly more effectiveness than standard devices thanks to their precise temperature control, high-quality materials and special functions for reliable and safe inhalation. They enable precise dosing of the active ingredients, which is particularly important for patients who are seeking a therapeutic effect.
Although the initial cost is higher, the precise release of active ingredients, durability, hygiene properties and medical certification justify the price for many users. In the long term, they offer a sustainable, safe and effective therapy option, which in many cases makes the higher price a worthwhile investment. Anyone who relies on high quality and reliable medical treatment will benefit from the advantages of a medical vaporizer.
Our recommendation? If you don't use cannabis for medical reasons, it's not worth it.
