Vaporizers in autumn: 7 tips for battery, cleaning & cold temperatures | HEAT

Autumn means: the device is often left cold, is used more often – and needs a little more attention.

As soon as it gets colder outside, a vaporizer behaves differently: The battery lasts for a shorter time, the device takes longer to reach temperature, and because more vapor is vaped inside, the air path clogs up faster.

None of this is a defect. You just need to be aware of it. The following seven points will get your setup through the cold season.

Point 01 · Basis

Why does a vaporizer behave differently in autumn than in summer?

Three things change simultaneously. The device is more often kept in a jacket pocket instead of on a table, so it often only reaches ambient temperature. It's used more often indoors, meaning more frequent use and at shorter intervals. And the battery performs worse in cold weather – that's due to chemistry, not wear and tear.

For you, this means: shorter operating time, longer warm-up time, more frequent cleaning. All three can be prepared.

Item 02 · Battery

Why does the battery perform worse in cold weather?

Chemical processes take place inside a lithium-ion battery, and these processes slow down in cold temperatures. The internal resistance increases, and the usable capacity decreases. At zero degrees Celsius, a battery can deliver noticeably less power than in a warm living room – without suffering permanent damage.

The effect is partially reversible: once the device returns to room temperature, the capacity is restored. What remains is the momentary interruption – and that's precisely what's annoying when you're on the go.

Important
Never charge a frozen battery.
Charging below zero degrees Celsius permanently damages a lithium-ion cell. Let it reach room temperature first, then connect the cable.

For those who regularly travel for extended periods, the easiest solution is to take a second battery with them: A spare L 18650 battery fits into Convectum, Nanu and the Stilus models with replaceable batteries and lies charged in the inside pocket – where it is warm.

Outdoors, the device should be kept in an inside pocket – the battery will last longer there.

Item 03 · Transport

Is it okay to leave the vaporizer in a cold car?

It's best not to. A car cools down to the outside temperature overnight and then maintains it. The next morning, the device will not only have a weak battery, but it will also attract condensation as it warms up – and moisture has no place in the heating chamber or the electronics.

The same applies to the balcony, the garden shed, and the car trunk. The vaporizer should be brought inside overnight.

Point 04 · Warm-up

How long does a cold appliance need to acclimatize?

As a rule of thumb: take off your jacket and have a coffee. Fifteen to twenty minutes at room temperature is usually sufficient for a portable device.

How to tell if it was too early: The device takes an unusually long time to reach the target temperature, the first puff tastes weak, and the battery level drops faster than usual. In that case, it's better to wait a few minutes instead of increasing the temperature.

And don't use a heater or hairdryer to help. Rapid temperature changes create exactly the condensation you want to avoid.

Item 05 · Temperature

What temperature is suitable for the cold season?

The temperature ranges don't change, only the path to get there. Heating devices operate between 80 and 220 °C.

Material Area
Hanfblüten 160–220 °C
Hash and Rosin 200–220 °C
Total device range 80–220 °C

The mistake many people make in autumn: The device feels cold, so they start at the top right away. This doesn't help, except that the flavor is gone after two puffs. It's better to start at the bottom and gradually work your way up – just like in summer.

Item 06 · Cleaning

How often should you clean in autumn?

More often than in summer, because it's used more. A practical schedule:

After each session Tap out the chamber while it's still warm. Five seconds, and half the work is saved.
Once a week Mouthpiece and sieve. That's where you first taste the difference.
Einmal im Monat Airway and chamber thoroughly – brush and isopropanol.

The cleaning kit with brushes and tools is sufficient for this; for a more thorough cleaning, 99,9% isopropanol is added. A practical tip: plastic parts cannot tolerate isopropanol; they should be cleaned dry or with warm water.

The same applies to the grinder. Resinous teeth grind unevenly, and unevenly ground material vaporizes poorly – the most common reason for disappointing draws has nothing to do with the device itself. How to clean different materials is explained in the article " Cleaning Grinders".

Item 07 · Device selection

Which HEAT vaporizer is suitable for on the go?

Two things matter during the cold season: How quickly the device is ready, and how easily you can access power when the battery runs out.

Model Price It's suitable if you...
Nanu 119,90 € … you want a compact device that fits in your jacket pocket, with a replaceable battery for long days outdoors.
Stilus Pro Max 149,00 € … you are looking for a device that works both indoors and outdoors and can be finely adjusted.
Convectum 169,00 € … you mostly steam at home and want the full convection draft.

Answered briefly

Frequently asked questions about vaporizers in autumn

Will a vaporizer break if it freezes?
Generally not, as long as it only gets cold. Charging when frozen and condensation during rapid warm-up are problematic. Both can be avoided.

Why does my battery suddenly only last half as long?
If this coincides with a change in the weather, it's usually the cold. If the device returns to room temperature and the operating time remains short, the battery is at the end of its lifespan.

Can I use the vaporizer outdoors in sub-zero temperatures?
Yes. Expect a longer warm-up time and shorter operating time, and carry the device on your body instead of in an outer pocket from time to time.

How do I store the vaporizer over the winter if I rarely use it?
Store dry, at room temperature, clean, and with the battery approximately half-charged. Lithium-ion cells age faster when stored fully or empty.

Do I need to clean more often in autumn than in summer?
Mostly yes, because it's used more often. The frequency depends on usage, not the season: tap it out after each session, clean the mouthpiece and screen weekly, and do a thorough cleaning monthly.
