What many don’t know

Even after the legalization of cannabis in Germany, purchasing it through online shops remains heavily regulated. Anyone who thinks they can simply order THC-containing weed with a click of a mouse is mistaken. However, there are legal ways to obtain medical cannabis – and we'll show you which ones.

Where can you order cannabis online in Germany?

With the partial legalization of cannabis on April 1, 2024, home cultivation and possession in small quantities was permitted – but not online trading with THC-containing cannabis. This means specifically: ✅ allowed Not allowed

Patients with certain medical conditions such as chronic pain, ADHD, or cancer can legally obtain medical cannabis with a doctor's prescription from German pharmacies – including online. These are high-quality products that are regularly tested. Platforms such as Flowzz and GreenMedical help with comparisons and convenient online ordering from certified pharmacies.

Websites like Leafly, Flowzz, and HanfMagazin offer a comprehensive overview of medical strains, active ingredients (THC & CBD), prices, and legal developments. These portals help you make informed decisions – with no pressure to buy and a focus on education and legality.

From July 1, 2025, adults in Germany will be allowed to become members of a Cannabis Social Club. In these cultivation associations, cannabis is cultivated communally and distributed among members—not sold. The clubs are limited to 500 members, must be licensed, and must be officially monitored. This allows for non-commercial personal use in a protected environment.

Adults are permitted to cultivate up to three female cannabis plants at home for their own personal use. It must be ensured that minors cannot access them. The plants may only be used for personal use and not for resale. The same applies here: Sharing them with others remains illegal – even among friends.

Even if it seems legitimate at first glance, the purchase of THC-containing cannabis through regular online shops is still prohibited. There are no licensed online retailers for recreational cannabis. The exception is medical cannabis with a prescription from certified pharmacies.

In Germany, cannabis may not be sent to end consumers via mail or private delivery services—neither by social clubs nor by shops. Any mail-order sales containing THC are currently prohibited by law to prevent abuse and uncontrolled distribution.

Public advertising – whether online, on billboards, or on social media – for cannabis with psychoactive effects (i.e., THC) is prohibited. Only neutral informational offerings or advertising for CBD products with less than 0,2% THC are permitted. The legislation here is closely aligned with the advertising guidelines for tobacco.

How to consume cannabis: methods, advantages & disadvantages

Depending on the purpose (medicinal, relaxing, creativity-enhancing), there are different forms of consumption. Here's an overview:

Inhalation (rapid onset of action)

The most common form of consumption is inhalation, which is traditionally done via a Joint, in which cannabis is mixed with or without tobacco and smoked. While this method is straightforward, it produces potentially harmful residues due to combustion.

The use of a VaporizersThis heats the plant material or concentrates to a temperature at which the active ingredients evaporate without combustion. This results in minimal emissions. Furthermore, vaporization is considered particularly discreet and ideal for medical use – for example, with high-quality devices such as the HIZEN Onewhich enables precise dosing.

Oral intake – slow but long-lasting

Those who do not want to inhale cannabis can also consume it orally. Particularly well-known are so-called Edibles – i.e., foods infused with cannabis, such as cookies, brownies, or gummy bears. The effects here take about one to two hours to take effect, but last significantly longer. Important: Edibles containing THC are currently not legally available in Germany – however, CBD-containing alternatives are.

A more controlled form of oral intake Tinctures or oils, which are dripped under the tongue or swallowed directly. They are particularly popular for medical use because the dosage can be precisely adjusted.

Topical application – targeted effect without intoxication

Cannabis does not necessarily have to be taken internally. Ointments and creams with cannabinoids are applied externally and have a local effect – for example, for muscle or joint pain, inflammation, or skin irritation. Since the active ingredients hardly enter the bloodstream, no psychoactive effect occurs. This form of application is therefore particularly popular among people who want to benefit from the therapeutic properties without experiencing a state of intoxication.

Safe cannabis consumption: What you should keep in mind

Even though cannabis can be consumed legally under certain conditions, conscious and responsible use is essential. Four key aspects will help you minimize risks and make the experience positive:
Set & Setting – your mental and external framework

Set & Setting – your mental and external framework

The effects of cannabis depend heavily on how you feel and where you are. It's best to only consume when you're mentally stable and in a safe, relaxed environment. Stress, insecurity, or an unfavorable social environment can negatively impact the experience and even lead to anxiety or paranoia. Allow enough time, don't be alone if you're feeling unsafe, and create a comfortable atmosphere.
Dosage – better less than too much

Dosage – better less than too much

Especially with edibles and highly potent products like extracts, less is more. While the effects of smoking or vaping occur quickly and are easily controllable, they are delayed by up to two hours when taken orally – often leading to an unintentionally high dose. Therefore, always start with a small amount and wait before adding more. An overdose can lead to nausea, panic, or circulatory problems.
Do not mix with alcohol

Do not mix with alcohol

Combining cannabis and alcohol can be unpredictable and intensify the side effects of both substances. Many people report nausea, dizziness, or loss of control when using both drugs. Furthermore, the risk of so-called "bad trips" increases significantly. If you use cannabis, you should consciously avoid alcohol – especially in public or new situations.
Be careful when driving – THC stays in the blood for a long time

Be careful when driving – THC stays in the blood for a long time

Even if you feel better after a few hours, you are not allowed to drive after consuming cannabis. THC can be detected in the blood for many hours, sometimes even days – and this can have consequences during roadside checks. Even with legal consumption, anyone driving under the influence of THC risks points, a driving ban, or even a driver's license suspension. Therefore, always play it safe and separate consumption from driving.
